Oberwetters to Share Saudi Adventure March 30

Oil. Terrorism. Religious freedom. Status of women. Arab customs and traditions.
Learn more about these important and interesting dimensions of U.S.–Middle Eastern relations from James C. Oberwetter, former U.S. ambassador to Saudi Arabia, and his wife, Anita, at Arabian Night on Sunday, March 30, at 5 p.m. at King of Glory.
The Oberwetters will share their experiences and observations during the three and one-half years they spent in Riyadh, returning in April 2007. A typical Middle Eastern buffet, catered by Fadi’s Mediterranean Grill, will follow.
Appointed ambassador to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia by President Bush in November 2003, Jim Oberwetter used his public policy, political and management experience to direct his team in a strategic repositioning of the U.S.–Saudi relationship in the wake of 9/11. He worked closely with the president and other senior U.S. officials as well as the Saudi king, crown prince and key ministers in a mission that was under continuous threat and one direct assault from Al Qaeda.
Anita Johnson Oberwetter, who accompanied her husband to Riyadh, represented the United States before the women’s community, touring medical facilities, schools, businesses and charities across the country as well as sponsoring events in support of cross-cultural exchanges.
Anita left her anesthesiology practice of 30 years to participate in the Saudi venture. She is a past president of the Texas Association of Nurse Anesthetists. Jim is the former senior vice president of governmental and public affairs for Hunt Consolidated, Inc. and has been active in local, state and national political campaigns as well as numerous local civic organizations. Upon his return to Dallas, he founded a consulting company that focuses on public policy issues and Middle East investment opportunities.
Long-time members of King of Glory, the Oberwetters have a fascinating story to tell of life in an exotic and at times dangerous country. Tickets for Arabian Night are $15 per person and go on sale after services on March 2. Seating is limited, so get your tickets early.
